Coordinate, Don't Match

The number one rule: coordinate with the wedding color palette but don't try to match the entourage exactly. You're not a bridesmaid — you're the mother. Choose a complementary color that works with the overall palette while still feeling distinctly you.

Choose Comfort as Well as Beauty

Wedding days are long. You'll be standing, hugging, crying (happy tears!), and dancing. Make sure your gown is something you can actually move in. A flowy A-line or an elegant midi dress is often more practical — and just as gorgeous — as a heavily structured ball gown.

Consider the Venue

A garden wedding calls for something lighter and more relaxed. A grand church wedding and ballroom reception calls for something more formal. The venue sets the tone for the entire dress code.

Don't Wear White, Ivory, or Champagne

This is the bride's color. Even a hint of it can cause tension you really don't need on the wedding day. When in doubt, go for a rich jewel tone — navy, emerald, deep rose, or burgundy.
